Rūta Labutytė

Praised for her flair and dedication, Ruta is extremely passionate about the music of E.W.Korngold. She will continue to explore the unjustly neglected music of Korngold, with plans to produce new critical edtions of his chamber music.

A young violinist at the very start of her career, Rūta balances her commitments as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, as well as a teacher across the UK and abroad. Currently she is in her first year of her Masters degree, specialising in orchestral artistry under the guidance of the CBSO. Her main violin teacher are Zoë Beyers and Kate Suther. Previously she studied with Simon Smith, Pavel Fischer, Carmel Kaine and Rivka Golani. She has played in masterclasses for Barnabas Keleman, Philippe Graffin, Rainer Schmidt, Krysia Ossostowicz, Detlef Hahn and Maciej Rakowski. On the academic side of music, Rūta is reseraching the style of violin playing in the 19th Century, and is conitnuing her work into E.W.Korngold’s chamber music.

Imaginative and convincing playing, making a beautiful sound and meeting the challenges of this work head on. This was a final project you should both be immensely proud of.

Louise Lansdown, Final project report on the performance of Korngold’s violin sonata

Chamber music plays a big part in her career – she is exploring a wide range of compositions for violin and piano with her duo partner, Guy Murgatroyd.

The pair, known as the ‘Korngold Duo’ met as students at Birmingham Conservatoire where they started their journey through the entire repertoire for violin and piano by Korngold. They took part in the British Music Festival at Birmingham Conservatoire, West Malvern Arts Festival, Wombourne Music Festival.

Korngold Duo

Ruta Labutyte and Guy Murgatroyd met with instant success on projects including the Fauré and Brahms sonatas. In the past six months the duo have met with notable competition success in various conservatoire prizes and are preparing for several international level competitions specialising in 20th and 21st century repertoire. Recent performances include concert halls and chamber events in Birmingham and London with future performances planned across the country beginning in Birmingham and Staffordshire this autumn season. Future projects include the recording of the complete music for violin and piano by Erich Wolfgang Korngold – the duo’s namesake which came about through the discovery of his chamber and inspired the duo to make the leap from ambitious students to a successful and professional chamber music duo.
